GROW Tasting

On May 12th, 2012 Joey and friends represented InFoods at GROW where the California Aquaponic Design Institute was hosting a demo. Community members, kids and adults alike all tried the InFoods spread, which included oatmeal cranberry cricket cookies, whole cricket snacks and delicious fruit leather.

Madrona League Competition

On May 4th, 2012 the InFoods team traveled up to Seattle to show off their products and compete in the 2012 Madrona League Business Plan Competition.

Hub SoMa Tasting

On April 21, we took the InFoods tasting road-show to the Hub SoMa where folks tasted whole cricket snacks, energy bars, gluten-free gingersnap cookies, and chocolate-covered date/walnut/cricket treats.

New Resource Bank Tasting

With the fruit leather and other insect-protein products in tow, we began the tasting circuit. First stop, New Resource Bank for its Earth Day celebration on April 20, 2012:

It was fascinating to observe who tried the treats and who wasn’t into it. We received rave reviews on the whole-cricket snacks, the energy bars and the fruit leather.  Overall, they loved it!

By mid-April we were prototyping fruit leather combos. We took ingredients like these:

And turned them into delicious, protein-fortified fruit leather!

The Processing Process

Hi Everyone!

After a short hiatus, it’s time to update the blog! Woo-hoo!

Back on March 31/April 1 we spent the weekend in the commercial kitchen at Canyon School – processing the crickets into a dry insect-protein-powder. Here are some shots from the process.

And voila! we have protein powder that’s 100% dry crickets: 65% protein by mass, high in fiber and high in calcium!

Teaching 5th graders about eating insects! Canyon school

John and Joey paid a visit to the 5th-7th grade class at Canyon School to give a presentation on eating insects. The kids loved it!

They had all kinds of great ideas for how to make insects more palatable – including chocolate covered, fried, ground and baked into a cake. At the end of the presentation we even had a few kids say that they had been scared of insects before the presentation, but now they are really interested in trying them.

We were even invited to auction off some of our product at the Canyon School April fundraiser – awesome!

Local Food Night at Hub SoMa

We sold insect protein fortified cookies and cupcakes at the Hub SoMa local food night on March 17, 2012. It was a blast! We made over $100 in revenue and proved that people will pay for food with insects in it!

The mealworms are doing great. They love eating organic celery, apples and carrots. Look at them go!
